At Academy, had reputation for being a stickler about rules and regulations; during midshipman cruise in 2257, filed numerous reports of minor infractions by other cadets as well as by crewmen and even officers.
First assignment: junior tactical officer, U.S.S. Halifax. Received high honors for his work in developing new methods for exploiting structural and operational weaknesses in Klingon, Tholian and Romulan warships. Promoted to lieutenant, 2260.
In 2263, transferred to U.S.S. Kilimanjaro, as senior tactical officer. Earned commendations for bravery under fire during landing party missions. In every case, Styles applied textbook Starfleet procedures to maximum effect. In 2265, promoted to lieutenant commander and named second officer of the Kilimanjaro.
In 2268, transferred to U.S.S. Tramontane as first officer, promoted to commander. Led first-contact mission to Jilura III, 2271. Despite strict adherence to all Starfleet protocols, the contact went awry, and the landing party suffered heavy casualties. Styles salvaged the mission by negotiating a truce and arranging for the planet to be interdicted to all Federation traffic.
In 2275, succeeded Captain Warfield as commanding officer of the Tramontane. Led Tramontane on several successful exploration missions. From 2279-83, helped track down and capture more than 160 Orion pirate starships that had been plaguing Federation commerce for nearly two decades.
Promoted to commanding officer of the experimental U.S.S. Excelsior, 2284. Tried unsuccesfully in 2285 to prevent Kirk and crew from stealing the Enterprise from spacedock.
